Callahan's Place

Misleadingly, this is actually a science fiction bookstore. In the late 90s, when the superchain bookstores were threatening to drive it out of business, the owners faced the choice of shutting down entirely, seeking regular employment elsewhere and leaving day-to day management to hired help, or appealing to family members for help. After a brief period of renovation, the acquisition of an adjoining building, and a transfer of daily operations to their son, the Place was open for business and going strong.

Thanks to their philanthropic friends, the owners were able to expand their business to include a state of the art book repair and refinishing facility. Business is booming, and the original owners are enjoying a life of semi-retirement.

What is not commonly known, is that the Place currently operates as a one-stop forgery shop for Jordano(or whichever family the GM chooses) Family members. It is commonly known on the street that the place operates a cyber-porn web server, and that's as far as the cops have bothered to look so far. The current operator, Tony Samms, has hopes of being a Made Man, but unless he gets it together and starts really working for it, is likely to stagnate and stay where he is for the next decade or more.

Shop Cheap

One of a chain of discount grocery stores, it keeps prices low by "merchandising" with stacks of opened shipping cartons on pallets. A few areas of the store have a single shelf, allowing a second stack of merchandise above the stack on the pallet on the floor. Perishables are kept in a cooler which has rolling racks with the ubiquitous boxes of merchandise; the freezer for the frozen food is similar.

Most of the merchandise is "off brand," but there are usually several brand name products available "until they're gone."

Other than the usual union corruption (cashiers are members of the cashier's union; truckers are members of the trucker's union), the store has recently begun carrying computers and digital cameras. One make/model, available til it's gone... and a few certainly fall off the truck into someone's waiting hands.

Legitimate Family business includes the occasional purchase of several cases of non-perishable food for donation to a food pantry. This buys off a few points of Suspicion.

Since the Fake DL needs a dc check, Gino will help you out on making that, enjoy a nice 36 DC check to know if it is fake.

Toscanni Funeral Home

The wake and rememberance services offered here emphasize comfort, compassion, and quality through the use of fine, warm oak furnishings, beautiful paintings and portraits, and candle-like ligthing fixtures. Micheal Toscanni himself will even lend a caring ear and offer some comforting words should they be needed. There's enough room to hold four services of approximately 250 people each or the rooms can be combined to accomodate two separate services of just over 500 each. Just off of the foyer and next to the offices, a small kitchette to provide some sustenance and a private sitting room with a TV is available for the grieving family members who may be at a wake all day. In the back and through the double-doors, the prep areas for the beautician and embalmer share the same large, tidy room, but are seaparated by rolling curtain stands. Through the double-doors at the far end of this room is where the furnace and pulverizer of the crematorium are located. Despite the costs of maintaining all the equipment and expensive furnishings, Toscanni's manages to provide all of its services at competitive rates. The heat radiating from the furnace after its use is enough to heat the building for many hours as well as melt the snow in the back alley even during the harshest of winters. Many vagrants frequent the alley in the hopes of keeping warm during the colder seasons. There's a stairway in the alley that leads to the upper floor of the building where Micheal Toscanni lives.
Micheal Toscanni has managed to accrue his wealth though several means. First, he had gotten to know the important members of the Families while working for his father, Vincenzo, during his college years. The high standards set by his father had honored the Family and provided some protection from being shaken-down, and their fequent use of such services provided the opportunity to give discounts instead. Second, after inheriting the Home and earning enough wealth, he listened for special Family events such as weddings and birthdays, and sent appropriately expensive gifts. Third, he's given the backdoor key to trusted members of the Families so that they may perform unscheduled cremation services late at night. The only stipulation for these services being that they call ahead to make sure no one else is in the back rooms. Fourth, over the years, he's gotten to know so many Family members (most as friends, some not) that knows many of their weaknesses. Despite that knowledge, he only exploits it when he absolutely must to protect himself, friends, family, and Family friends from harm, preffering to use diplomacy instead. His long memory and all the time spent near Family members has aided him greatly in this regard.

Well, I guess I should add some stuff worth helping to fall off the truck... Even bacon wrapped filet mignon isn't worth making off with in the quantities Shop Cheap would stock!

I always wondered why Aldi's (the RL equivalent) thought people would buy computers and digital cameras from them! I guess I've found out...

It's A Dollar

As the name says, all merchandise sold by this store is $1. Items include slightly irregular name-brand products, off-brand products, manufacturer's overruns -- anything that can be bought cheap in volume and sold quickly. Two things are always true at It's A Dollar: "If you don't see it, check back next week" and "You should have bought it when you saw it." New items are placed on the shelves wherever space becomes available, requiring customers to cruise the aisles. A half price bin in the back is filled with a jumble of the last one or two items of previous weeks' "featured items." Sometimes the bin is overflowing with one item that just didn't sell...

Although It's A Dollar is a chain, each store is individually operated. It's A Dollar does operate a central warehouse and bill the stores for this stock, but the store owners may also acquire merchandise on their own. Stores in the chain may sometimes ship large quantities of merchandise aquired this way to the warehouse for distribution to the other stores in the chain.

Stores in this chain tend to be located in rundown storefronts, underpopulated malls, and grungy strip malls.

By Mr. D's Wealth rules, any character with +1 Wealth or more can purchase any reasonable amount of product at It's A Dollar. GM's discretion on quantities available.

Example: No, you can't buy 1000 toilet brushes!

Make a DC 10 check to determine if any particular item is in stock. This roll may be modified by either Charisma, representing sweet talking an employee into checking the back room or Will, representing digging through the bins. The character may instead spend an hour digging through the bin by taking 10.

If failed, a DC 5 check can be made to see if there's a "reasonable" substitution. The GM should feel free to exercise his or her creativity when offering alternate items.

Example: You want white tennis shoes. You fail the first roll, so there's no tennis shoes. You make the second roll... they have hot pink flip flops.

Potential Family connections: Potential buyer of stuff that fell off someone else's truck. Store owner will launder money for a fee. Players might buy a franchise to look legit or perform the above services. Cases of food items can be purchased and donated to food pantries to buy off a point of Suspicion. Store owner is dealing untaxed cigarettes or drugs or small valuable items out of the back room (these are at normal or near normal prices).

Plot hook: The entire It's A Dollar chain is owned by a mid- to high-level Wiseguy in one of the big Families, GM's choice.
